Default 02 CRF450 cam in TRX450

I saw on moto x perts site that they use these cams in I think 90% of their xc/recreational R's but has anyone done this on the org. Was thinking about the 02 crf cam or a HRC cam.

I tried one in my 07 and advise you strongly not to waste your time unless you like your 4 stroke to feel like a 2 stroke. It puts the power near the chip and loses mucho torque. It would probably be good with a 14.5.1 piston and you want dyno numbers or drag race.

I run the 02 crf in my mx build. Works good. I have liked it so far but my next engine is getting a new cam. Either a web 208 or a megacycle havent decided yet. What mods do you have and what kinda riding do you do?

motor wise i'm working on an exhaust, cam, intake and maybe some other things just the usual stuff I guess but I mostly do woods riding and just kinda freeride at the parks I go to here in missouri but wanting to venture out into some other parks in the neighboring states and maybe do some racing sometime.

I run it in my 05 and I love it. I had previously run an hrc cam but the crf cam feels better all through the power band, especially noticeable more low and mid power compared to the hrc.
I haven't heard too many people running the 02 crf in the 06+ though.
I'm pretty sure there is a sticky in the engine section breaking down the cams you should check out also.

your the first person i have ever heard say that about the 02 cam. i cant disagree with you because i dont know if it performs that different in a 07 then it does in a 04 but it was far from a 2 stroke feel or top end cam in my 04. i cant say i really liked it but i thought it was middle of the road boring cam. i like the 06 hrc better for mx/woods and bottom end feel, and the 04 hrc for dunes/drags and top end feel. but its been said many times different parts will perform different from one build to the next.

I heard lots of people saying this was a great cam so I tried it on a pump gas big bore build and even raced one mx race. It was weak on the low and came on like a 2 stroke in the upper mids. I tried 7 cams in comparison(HC1, 02CRF,03 CRF, HRC,HC2,HRC, 02crf) so I would actually know what each one felt like within a 6 month period.

I came to the conclusion that the people that loved the 02 had to be running 04-05 TRX. .. OR, have high compression piston to make up for the power loss down low. I have never heard anyone (that races) say this is good in an 06+ on pump gas... especially for torque. If people want to come forward and share different experience, I am open to that, but thats what I found.

skip. youre right about the 02 crf cam is better for the 04 05. you need a newer model crf cam for the 06+ trx. all i know is that my 05 got a huge wake up call with the 02 crf cam

I got a 05 with a early HRC cam. just got the motor back together last month and have been out at the track testing it out. So far i am happy with it, i did have a HotCamII in it before but the rocker arm bearing failed and damaged it, so thats when i switched to the HRC. Heard there almost identical. But after reading the posts from the guys running a CRF cam, i am almost tempted to try.

@ NORCAL 450 you had said that you had a HRC cam before you switched to the CRF. Was it a big noticable differance? or just slight?

CRF450 CRF450R CRF 450 OEM Camshaft Cam Shaft 03-06 14110-MEN-670 | eBay
If anyone wants a mint 02 CRF cam less than 100 dollars,
Here is one on ebay listed as 03-06 CRF cam but,
You can tell by the photo that its an 02 because there is no grooves.

I had an 02 CRF cam in my 07 for a while but got tired of it. If you want a lot of top end and want a "2-stroke" feel, go for it. I now have the 06+ HRC cam and love it. The HRC cam has a broader range of power and produces more usable torque across the entire powerband. Sounds to me like the 06+ cam would work great for you. Good luck.

I noticed a bigger low and mid gain when I switched to the crf cam and the top end pull was more gradual. The hrc cam just seemed to hit hard on the top end.
I also swapped the stock carb to an 06 fcr carb when I switched cams but just the carb swap is not supposed to add power anywhere just better throttle response.
