Default 13:1 JE piston

with this piston what octane should i really run i have heard 91 to 112? Could i get away with 104? Also what will happen if i don't run high enough octane? Lastly how often should i change the rings if i ride about twice a month hard?
thanks
colton

if you dont have enough octane, you can get into detonation. detonation is a very destructive. it is an extremely violent explosion that will destroy pistons, heads, cranks, rods/bearings, and cases. i would say that you are borderline on running pump gas safely. i would mix it with 110 to be safe. 60 pump/40 race would be fine imo.

I'd be careful.. maybe call JE and tell them your build..see what they recommend.

If you do start mixing 91 / race gas... here's a cheeky little calculator..

That is a bit presumptuous to suggest that he can run at that comp ratio just because you can....unless he is running the exact same setup as you....and even then, altitude, temps or a bad batch of gas can change that real quick.

A good rule of thumb is 12.5:1 for pump gas...but running at a higher comp can be done...if you are willing to put in the time and effort to test/tune.

I had a buddy who used the octane boost with 91 octane on his YFZ and it ran TERRIBLE. He's running the high comp. JE and he switched over to running 110 and it runs perfect. The mechanic who did the build, and i'm not saying that yours has the exact same build, recommended running 110..hope this helps!

You are running the 04/05 HRC cam...so you can actually get away with running at that comp fairly safely...due to the amount of overlap....but having some good octane boost or race gas to mix would be a good idea for added protection....just make sure whatever you use actually raises the octane rating by a full points...not a few .10ths of a point.

...but ,once again...it's not a "one size fits all"...when it comes to octane requirements...so always error on the side of caution if you are unsure.

Good luck

Yes...a 50/50 mix or maybe even a 75/25 pump gas/100 octane would probably be fine.

I know on the Venom site they say 105+ octane for their 14.5:1 piston. So at 13.5:1 100 should be ok...if that helps...info only!
