Default Pilot jet question

I have read countless threads about jetting and still havent got the real direct answer i would like. so tonight was the first ride in a few weeks because i have been waiting on jets to get here. i want to know how to tell if my pilot jet is lean or rich? also whats the best way to tell if my main jet is lean or rich without taking my plug out, or is there?'

the way i work the pilot is by the turns on the fuel screw. if it's too far out than you need a bigger pilot, too far in you need a smaller pilot. they like the range ~ 2to 3 turns out. every motor is differant. the big problem i had is turn the fuel screw too far out and it will viberate and fall out. as far as your main look at the exaust and it will give you an idea of how it's running. black is too much gas and chalky white is right... but to tell the truth a dyno with sniffer is the only way to get it all right. the carb is a tricky thing . it has 4 areas of tuning. which you have read about. and that's what makes or breaks you, being able to tune. good luck and hope this makes since!

for the main you wanna take out the plug and do a plug chop. Its easy and doesnt take long. Imo worth the little extra effort to know your tuned right and dont have to worry about lean and engine damage.

i do the pilot circuit pretty much same way cheap fast described

^^ with plug chop you can also find the correct heat range.

mine is a 45 pilot with just over half turn out and 160 main. that's my 42.5 RE carb i've been running. i haven't ran the drg 43.5 carb yet.

what yr do you have, it sound rich too me.... but i have an 06. the 04/04's like more. but it also depends on your carb. is it stock, mine was worked so alot of other stuff was addressed to make the jetting back right from after being bored....

really do a full throttle pass in 4th gear. at 2/3rds of the pull kill the motor and coast to the side and pull the plug. what you will see is the color around the insulation and i like it white and clean looking. do it on a new plug. that will only tell you about the main jet. if you want to see whats happening with your needle, only run half throttle and do the same kill and read. same with the idle ckt just idle for a while then read the plug. sounds like a lot well it is...lol that's why it's so much easer with a dyno and sniffer....

hope it helps, one thing that sets the jetting is the exuast. keep good packing in their to keep the proper back pressure. if you loose the packing or it gets all burnt out replace the packing or it will throw you off your jetting....

Ok....here are some rough 'guidelines'....not sure if I mentioned this in my tuning sticky guide...

the 04/05 machines run a carb that is not as 'sophisticated' as the later model FCR's.... so, you kinda have to 'fudge' with the jetting as you would a similar 2-banger machine. Each of the jetting 'circuits' will overlap one another, just like on the FCR. But, the FCR has adjustments in the acc pump circuit (leak jet) that the 42 keihin does not...probably why the 42 came with an adjustable needle....

Ok....the 'typical' way for adjusting the pilot is at idle and off idle... old school way is to simply richen this circuit up by turning out the pilot screw (fuel screw on 4-stroke) or by turning IN the pilot screw (Air screw on 2-stroke)... then, at idle speed, LEAN down this circuit until you reach maximum RPM...then richen this circuit by about 1/4 turn. Now, that makes for a perfect IDLING and easy starting machine... however, it will often cause a BAWG on 2-strokes and machines w/o an adj acc pump circuit. So, you usually have to either increase the fuel in the Pilot circuit (larger slow jet or richen the fuel or air screw, depending on 4stroke vs 2stroke).... another alternative is to richen the needle position....OR, usually, a combination of the two... I can say that on most two strokes, the needle position is USUALLY what you fatten up to compensate for a bog when stabbing the throttle.... Once you have adjusted your fuel screw (4-stroke), if it is too far in (less than 1 turn out) you want to go with the next size SMALLER slow jet. If it is too far out (more then 3 turns out) you want to go with the next LARGER slow jet. And continue to adjust accordingly... just the opposite for 2-strokes because they USUALLY use an AIR screw. when your all said and done, your gonna have a machine that is not tuned PERFECTLY in each circuit, but has been adjusted to work at it's best, given the ability of the carb. With the FCR it is far easier... just tune the pilot circuit using the 'fast idle' method... and if there is a bog... simply adjust the leak jet... or needle....or both, to compensate.

there...clear as mudd... jmho...g
