Hey guys, a buddy brought his 06 450er to my shop because he thought the crank siezed. come to find out it was the reduction gear off the starter. One of the gears had seized on its shaft. Searched an never found that that had happened before. anyways after some more inspection, one of the valve shims was missing. which beat the retainer to ****. to get the new retainer in the head had to come off. then we found a broken top ring. a few days later, everything is back together. new rings, new retainer, new reduction gear, new plug.
press start button, nothing. just rolls over an over.. a little looking, find no spark. the wire from the harness to the coil was broken. thats fixed now we got spark, but she wont start.
do some more research on the org. check the valve lash again. exhaust is good, intake one side is good, one is around .003. kinda tight but should still start. And of all the shims I have. I dont have the right size to get that one in spec.
still no go. check the decomp pressure. its at 35psi. I bump it up to the 65 like it says on here. the thing will barely turn over now.
more frustrations.... after some more tinkering I grab my buddies 08 450er and swap plugs still nothing. check his decomp pressure. 35psi on my gauge. so i set the 06's back to the 35 . still nothing.
I gave up for the night. one thing i did notice tho. the 06 turns over considerably slower then the 08. Is there something I could have missed on the 06 when we put it back together to cause the slow turning over. ?? which im gunna assume is making it not start. turning so slow. not making enough spark to ignite.

my heads goin crazy tryin to figure this bike. please help!

sounds like the starter clutch has given up. thats a common prob with the er's. they had a recall on the starter clutch in 06, but it's dead now. they said it was a service update not a safty recall. get a one way clutch and reset your decompression back to 65psi and you should be fine.

ok well try that. I know from my old 660 raptor, when the start clutch it just spun. Is there anything I can check to make sure its the starter clutch?

thanks

when you pull it out it will look worn and check the race too, it could be pitted if so replace it. mine fell apart when i removed it. but if it's turning slow that is the problem for sure. after replacing just remember the worst thing you can do to your quad is crank it with the throttle open! it will ruin the starter clutch very fast.

Is the starter clutch assembly supposed to come apart? or spin in itself.

yes it comes apart, you have to take the clips out to get it apart. it should only turn one way.

and it doesn't turn at all. Im going to assume this does the same job as whats on the YFZ's and LTr's behind their flywheel , which only turns the one direction. This doesn't more nor come appart. Looks like time for a new unit.

you should be able to get it apart. you can reuse the 35t gear if it's not pitted. note the holes in the 35t use something to tap and twist and it will come apart. or you can get a new assy. i did mine the hard way and replaced all parts that were involved in the recall, or you can just get the oneway clutch... and reuse 35t gear and race and needle bearing. replacing all will run around 230 bucks. the other way is ~ 100 bucks.

So i got the sucker apart. and it's totally fubar'd. Any surface that the rollers would run on is pitted and torn up. So looks like a whole new unit for us.
Is this caused by trying to start it and hitting the throttle? My buddy has only had the quad 2 weeks and then this happened.

yes that will cause it to go bad. never give gas while cranking. if you need to hit the throttle once or twice before you crank. but if valves decompression and carb are right it will crank very fast with no throttle. like maybe turn over twice to crank. but it will never crank as fast as a kicker. set your decompressor to 60-65psi and starter clutch will be fine. but no throttle while cranking , it causes a bad kick back on the clutch system. glad you got it figured out!

this sounds like what is wrong with mine.. i got it for 2g's and it has the oe front tires, front rear bumpers, after market rear carrier, exhaust bars... i'm a 250R guy but this deal landed in my lap.. i was joking when i told dude i'd give him 2,000 for it and he asked if i had it right now. both the owners are kinda slow so i'm sure they were working that throttle while turning it over. just joined the org today and i'm stoked it's a common thing and i'll be tearing into when i get back home. maybe i'll post some pics and an update soon.
