So I've read around here that storing your gas in plastic gas containers is not the greatest. I thought I saw where the gas stored in plastic gas containers over time actually lose points.

Unfortunately, I only have 1 metal gas container, and the rest are plastic. When I purchase my fuel (110 sunoco), I purchase 9 gallons at a time. 5 gallons in a plastic container, and 4 in the metal container. I use the plastic container first, to go ahead and burn it up so it doesn't have to spend a lot of time in the plastic container. And I use the gas in the metal container last.

I've been looking around to buy another metal gas container, but they don't make them too much any more. The only thing I can find is this thing called a "safety gas container" for $40!

So can anyone shed some light on the metal vs. plastic gas container debate? And does anyone know where they sell cheap metal gas containers?

Any info is appreciated.

My VP rep tells me the same thing about metal and plastic containers. He didn't get into specifics but did say that over time gas will turn bad in plastic containers and will last up to 6 months in a metal one. He also said that if I'm done using gas for the weekend in the plastic jug then you can pour it back into the 5 gallon or 55 gallon metal container it came out of. Hope this helps.

I transfer the fuel I'm immediately going to use from a metal can into a plastic then into my quad's tank. Reason I use the plastic at all is to help keep from spilling it, since the plastic one has the long tube.

Plastic breathes and lets the pressure of the fuel out. If you've ever seen a quad's tank with graphics that's bubbling, it's because of the gasses escaping from the tank. Metal is sealed tight and that's why fuel won't go bad in it. Fuel can go bad in a plastic tank over time.

sredish, have you any idea of how much time it does take? Or what amount of time it takes to lose so many octane "points?"

no clue about the octane points but i wouldn't want it to sit in it for over a month, for sure. You might talk to a fuel company like VP or Klotz about that.

Direct sunlight on the plastic jug will speed up the process of ruining the fuel.

Different levels (thickness and type) of plastic containers affect the process as well.

I have heard it takes 6 months of normal storage in a VP approved plastic jug before it goes "bad".

I have always bought my race gas in the 55 gl barrels...back When I raced 2 wheel moto cross I would go through it fast so there was never a worry about age....But I have always kept the barrell in my shop on a pallett....I do remember reading a VP brochure a few yrs back about that if its kept in a metal sealed container something like indefinite storage...? But One thing I can tell ya for what its worth is The last barrell I had left over took me 3 yrs to use up!!! NO BS even still looked and smelled great...But I have no way of knowing how deterioraed it was??? But my 250R LRD hi comp 350CC race gas motor ran fine on it to the end...SO my feeling is..keep it in the barrell, off the floor, dry and in an insulated shop......Late

Geez that stuff is expensive. I think I'll just be watching yard sales or something for old metal gas cans....

Find a VP (or other brand) distributer and by some gas in 5 gallon pales. Where I last bought VP fuel it was an extra $10 to get it in it's own 5 gallon metal container than to have it pumped into my jug from a big drum.

Just to reiterate, storage in plastic jugs is bad. The lighter hydrocarbons evaporate at ambient air temperatures--plastic jugs can't contain them. Loose too many and cold starting deteriorates as does octane rating. Also, sunlight oxidizes tetraethyl lead further reducing octane rating (if it's a leaded fuel).
