hey guys im not sure if this is in the right section but i want to know if any of you guys have done a 400ex to 450 motor swop? im planning on putting a 450r motor into my 400ex. most of you are going to say just buy a 450r but that isn't really an option. i've been researching this alot and i've found 2 ppl that have done it. one used a crf 450 motor and idk what the other one used but i email him and haven't gotten a responce yet. i think this could be pretty easily done. there would have to be custom machined pieces that would be needed to be made tho, such as front motor mounts, spacers for the swingarm/back motor mount, radiator mounts. i plan on doing this this winter so at the end of summer i will be selling my 400ex motor and will be looking for a 450r motor. (not er) so if any of you guys could give me some advice or info on this subject that would be great!! thanks alot guys!

I think your under estimating the amout of work, you say a 450 is not an option (why ?)

for the time and money you are going to sink into it you could buy a 450r

and when its all said and done your still just going to have a 400ex with a great motor

there is a guy (I think he races with the K&K guys from eastern kansas/western missouri) that flat tracks a 400ex/450r hybred

if you go through with it post it up so we can watch the build and the next guy who wants to try this will have a clue

good luck
Jimmy

I swapped a 450r engine in and it was the best mod i ever did to the 400ex. The only thing that sucks obout the swap is the kicker. It dont really havce a place to go so it just tucks against the plastic. It doesnt get in the way but it doesnt tuck away neatly. You could however get an electric start engine out of an ER though and you wouldnt have that problem.

Sell the 400, buy a 450r. How is it difficult? Id rather have a 250r swapped 400ex if anything.

By the time your done setting up that 400 with 450r motor/suspension your going to be more into it than just buying what you want, and unless you have an HRC kit or better on the 450 motor or 06+, the power gain is going to be a let-down.

i dont have any advice for you other than, if you want to, go for it.

if you have the time and ability, why not?

i like to fabricate. if i had a 400 chassis and a 450r engine, i sure the **** would do the swap.

aj81,

im pretty sure he is doing the swap for himself, not you. if you want a 250r engine in a 400 then build one yourself. he wants to swap a 450r engine in his.

its a lot easier to say nothing than it is to discourage one from trying to do what they want to.

Im not telling him what to do, Im just stating my thoughts on the idea. If he HAD a 450r motor, I might have a different opinion. Then Id say sell the motor on Ebay and take the $1200 + #2300 from the 400ex sale...and yeah you guessed it...

Would I be cursed out if I said that the worse part of the 450r chassis is the motor w/ its crank and rod bearing problems? I was never afraid of getting a locked up motor when I had a 400.

Oh and I wouldnt build a 400/250 simply because there are so many 250r's for sale right now.

I have run against EX hybrids with R and CRF motors in flat track and mx and in either they are dominant.
I agree that it probably would not be cost effective to go buy all new parts but then again if I wanted to build it and had a purpose for it , I would.
Go for it and good luck.

wow guys thanks for all the replys! i wasn't expecting so many so fast! i cannot buy a 450r because my dad is a dick and wood put me on a preditor 110 if he could haha. i really like fabricating and modding things and 400 isn't fast enough for me. i've riden a 450 and it blew me away the difference in my 400. it was great. the mounting and getting things machined isn't going to be the most difficult thing ever. i know its going to be alot of work and im prepared for that. im wondering how i can run lights still with a 450 motor, while still eliminating the battery. is this possible? are the 450 and 400 light harnesses the same?

Lights would be no problem, if the connectors are not the same, just cut them off and splice into the harness. If you look around I think you will find a lot of hybrids. Exriders.com usually has several on the forum. There used to be a lot of people who ran 400 or 250r hybrids with either yzf or crf motors.

As far as switching, doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, I always like the comfort and ride of my 400 better than I do my 450, on most days I do.
