2003 Z400 Wont Start, Help!!!!!

Buddy has an 03 Z400 and it will not start on its own ( with the satrter) but if you pull it it will fire right up instantly. It has great spark, its getting fuel, comp is good and its getting air. Please help.

There are only 3 things required to run an engine as far as I know, Fuel, Air and Spark and it has all 3.

Charge the Battery

Thats all i can Think of. Is there a clicking when you hit the starter.

the choke is stuck off, this happens to all of them. Do this and it will prove it. Take the airfilter off, put your hand over the hole where the air filter goes, closing it off. Then start it. This manually chokes it and it will start right up. What you will find is where the choke screws into the side of the carb, unscrew that and the choke will be stuck in there, You will have to pull really hard to get it out but it will come out with enough force. Then clean it all out and put it back together.....this will fix it. Ebay sells a manual choke that fixes this problem...good luck and ask me if you have any questions. B)

Lude I disassembled the entire carb today and cleaned it all out to see if that may have been the problem but it was clean, the choke thing came right out with no trouble too. The choke lever moves perfectly too, I am lost on this one, I thought maybe it was some type of a safty switch or something ( neutral safty swith or?) but it has good spark so that kinda eliminates that too.

This bike is out to drive me nutts I think! Makes no sense that if I pull start it it will fire up instantly but you can hold the starter button and it will just whirl over like nothing and not start. Any other ideas?

This might be a dumb question, but are you sure the starter is turning the motor over?

Yeap, its sucken air in the carb and pushin air out the exhaust :) . The only dumb question is the one not asked

thats crazy, I would try to manually choke it like I said before just to see if that starts it. I had to start my z like this a few times until i fiqured out it was the choke. My choke acted fine too, but when I took the top off the carb off. there is a little hole that you can look in, while looking in there and moving the choke back and forth, the choke would never actually move, but everything else would....Thats all I can think of though....good luck.

Is the battery good? If the battery is weak it will not turn the motor over fast enough to start. My sons Z did that, the motor would turn over but not start unless pulled. Fully charged battery and it would fire up but once it sat and the battery drained some it would just turn over and not start.

Okay the problem was the valve clearneces

, the valve seats are pushing themselves into the head, responsable for reducing the clearences.

Intakes are suposed to be between .010 and .020

These were .001 and .004

Exhaust are suposed to be between .020 and .030

These were .009 and .010

The guy didn't want to spend the big bucks so I reshimed all of them to their greatest tolorences and guess what???? It fired RIGHT up and runs perfect but for how long??? I will report back if and when it fails again :) .

i had the same problem ,i bent the valves,i was being chased by cops and pinned it ,got home she wouldnt start,only if you pushed start it.
