Stock motor? Year? Have you ever adjusted the valves?

I don't know b/c I can't hear it, but I would say a good valve adjustment would cure it. If it has had the crap ran out of it a timing chain might not be a bad idea. Use one from an 02 crf450 and it is like a heavy duty chain for a 400.

Your 400 is fairly new. So i would put money on that its the valves and they need to be adjusted. This is a very easy process compared to the 450 motor.

All you have to do is remove the plastics and tank and there are four caps on the valve cover. Take these out, and you will see rocker arms with holder nuts and little flat head screwdriver bolts.

Watch till the ex is all the way compressed to set the intake and vice versa.

Stick your feeler gauge in and adjust.

With a few more hours it will tick from the rocker arms being worn out.

Also a oil change can take away the ticking if its old oil.

like kip said .... pry the valves...

this is foolish question and not intended to insult n e 1, but have you checked the oil to see if u have oil in it ???? it might be u are extremely low on oil....

but adjusting the valves would pry be a good idea...

Yeah, it's a common valve tap with the 400's, you just need to adjust the valves.
