Well I was stupid and decided to leave anti freeze in the quad when i left for a couple months and completely cracked open my head. It was shooting out literally streams of anti freeze when I'd kick it without the plug. I decided to strip it down and completely redo it. This is what I've gotten so far. Still waiting on some parts, and powder to be done but that will come in do time!
So far i bought a new head and had it ported and had a 5 angle valve job, with a thorough cleaning using scotch pads and rubbing alcohol. Looking pretty good for used
The piston rings were stuck/fused on my old cp Carrillo piston (high compression) and I've decided to ditch that set up and snagged a nice 479 big bore kit on ebay which I'm currently waiting for. My engine is filthy! Don't judge me. I'm in the process of cleaning it.
The frame, a arms and steering stem are being powder coated right now. I'm going with illusion blue berry (prismatic powder) for the frame and upper a arms, and black with a slight blue flake for the stem and lowers and also sub frame. The a arms are houser +2 st a arms with stage 2 elkas. I have a bunch of random new parts you'll see as it goes along. This has been my project I've been slowly piecing together as I've been stationed in italy for the last two years in the army!
Enjoy!
I'll keep this post updated as the build goes on. I'll be home in February to put the frame back together and get it rolling as well as the engine ready to mount!!!!
Sweet! Will be cool to see it finished up man! I will tell you I just did a Full top and bottom rebuild on my 05 TRX450R and it's a Monster now. I went with the Cylinder Works 97mm Big Bore "479cc" a 2 Layer Cometic Head Gasket, Decked head at .030, Epoxy Ported, Kibble White Valve Springs, Kibble White Valves, Stage 3 hot Cam, Full Rossier Exhaust, Hot Rods Crank, and a FCR Carb it runs great! The Vertex Piston Supplied with the Kit is not the best.... but I'm running it for right now and I'm more then pleased enough with it lot's of power and pulls for miles.
Heads up!
This Common issue on the 04 and 05's I would Highly Suggest checking out before you freshen up the top end. I would highly Suggest since you got the Entire top end taken off check your Crank shafts "Side to side play" (The way to check is by pulling off the Stator Cover and grab the Flywheel then "push and pull" on the Flywheel) if you feel it move and hear any Clunking while doing so it means your left Bearing came out of the left Case which like I said is a common problem for 04 to 05 TRX450R's. Reason I am telling you this is because it would suck to do all that top end work and then 3 or 4 months later the Famous TRX450R Rod Bearing Failure happens and ruins everything (Not saying it will happen but it's good idea to look it over now because how often it happens).
Now if you do have Side to Side play o the Crank you either need to get new Left Case and get new Main Bearings pressed in and then pull the new crank through the Left bearing and it would be good. Another way is you can have the Right Side bearing Shimmed to push the Crank over to the left locking that Left bearing in Place with .003 of side to side play to allow for Oil and Thermal expansion Clearance (Shimming the Right Side Bearing is what I did).
Why this happens? Well the left Bearing (04 and 05 TRX450R's) is pressed in from Factory and then the Crank is pulled "Pressed if we may call it that" through the left inner race of the Left Bearing locking the Crank from moving side to side at all, well after all of the years of Heat Cycles either the Crank or the bearing comes out of the left case after and then causes the Crank to shift to the Right, when this happens it causes a Stress point on the Rod Bearing which then starts pinching the Thrust Washers between the Rod and Crank because the Crank wants to "Walk" to the Right and the Rod wants to stay Strait, then metal Shaving Galore happens along with a ruined bottom end.
Usually Shimming the Right bearing will stop the Left bearing from ever moving again since the Left Bearing is only Pressed in. The way that it's done is that you have to Temporarily Assemble the new Crank with the old bearings still in place along with a center case gasket, then put in all case bolts hand tighten them all, and then measure how much the Crank moves side to side, then for Example ---> (If you have .022" Side to Side play, you wanna keep .003 for Thermal Expansion, so you need a .018" Thick shim) this shim will need to be Custom Laser or water jet cut out of ".018 thick stainless steel or regular steel will work in the sane OD as the bearing OD Race" and then the shim is placed in the Right Side Bearing pocket before pressing the Right Side bearing into Place, this is so that way when the Right Bearing is pressed in it causes the right bearing to press in all the way till it stops at that shim, which then bucks the Right bearing out just enough to keep the crank from "Walking".
I'll check it when I'm home. That's very helpful! Especially since that happened to me and i had a left bearing pressed in Less that 3 hours run time ago! But it never hurts to double check, and that is a neat trick. I have a 479 cylinder works kit coming in the mail as well! I'm thinking about snagging a Namura piston, because I've had promising results with them! Will keep post updated as the build goes on! The frame should be done soon!
Thanks! It may not be as part savvy as some of the other posts, because I'm a broke 22 year old spending all my money on a baby girl ? but it'll look beautiful in the end.
What graphics kits do you guys think would look good on here? I was thinking the sara Sandusky dirtfriend graphics kit (electric) because it's different! I don't want an over used kit!
Hahahaha i don't think there's many people fast enough on a 450 to make that possible ??? can't have a gf faster than you. That's why my wife has a 300ex [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]
The powder coating on the frame is done, still don't have the a arm pictures yet or sub frame lol I'll get them eventually
Illusion blue berry by prismatic powder
Got into the garage a little today! My least favorite part is now done. I hate cleaning shocks, and rebuilding a arms but it sure pays off! I Love the way it looks
If i could afford better shocks i would. I don't mind these with my a arm setup, so these will do!
Well i got a lot done today. Finally. Waiting on a stator gasket and graphics kit then it'll be done!
Can someone tell me where my coolant overflow goes? Lol i can't find any pictures
If anyone tells you a skid plate from a trx250r won't fit an 05 trx450r...theyre wrong. I drilled two holes and it fits just fine! I love this skid plate...always have
I cut my skid plate down the middle for the hygear link.
Still have some more work...just small things like bleed the brakes and put new oil and oil filter in....i ran to the Trojan power sports today and forgot to get antifreeze.... go figure. Ill be running 20-40w Honda oil in the clutch side and 10 40w amsoil on the crank side. My plastics look like crap because I'm a poor 21 year old lol but the graphics kit will cover it all. I'm buying a used set of black plastics in a couple weeks.
Also!
How does the front headlight mount on a 2004-2005 trx?
I bought 06 and up mounts and its a no go.
Plastics are an easy fix. Wet sand them progressively with finer and finer grits. Then take a propane torch set to low and you melt the plastic slightly, or a heat gun.
If you got 06 headlight mounts you could go ahead and get 06 headlight and hood. Only mod required is drilling 2 holes in the frame for the middle/upper mount. There is also some minor mods to the 04/05 front plastics for the hood to fit but I got 06 front plastics for mine so I didn't have to do that. I like the look of the 06 headlight a lot better.
yeah i seen that mod thread on here in my search to make this work. I ended up just 2 day shipping the mounts from Rocky mountain! Will take pictures later. She's ready to take to Louisiana! The only thing that didn't make it home in time is the graphics kit sadly
I wish my camera didn't decide to break! It runs great. After a few hiccups it's ripping! My valve cover didn't seat, had a huge scare thinking i over torqued the head bolts, turned out it was the valve cover. When i fixed the gasket, i took it back to the trails, and my throttle body on my twist throttle broke and stuck wide open in 4th gear! Faulty product... eBay seller was very keen on replacing it! Works great now. I'll be in Georgia for the cannonball race. Look for 794!
