To try and provide a little bit of media and/or entertainment to the Org - I thought I would start posting pictures of the "refresh" I'm attempting to carry out on my little bike.
This thread will probably just be a ton of pictures of the rebuild with a little blurb about each pic. Check back often for progress.
I had this frame powdercoated a year ago by a local guy. He is a nice guy, but his powder work just wasn't up to par. Below are some shots of how the original powder looked last year when I had it done. This is the main reason why I decided to tear this bike back apart and do a "refresh".
After everything was apart, I decided to snap a couple pictures of how well the powdercoat stood up to a years worth of "use". The sad thing about this is...I only used the bike for 3 short drag events. And...it's stored inside my garage at all times...not outside in the elements.
Next, I made a slight bit of progress reassembling. Installed the stem bearing, mounted the subframe, and that's how she sits right now.
Last bit of progress being posted for today. I'm hoping to find someone to trade my front Marvin Shaws with. I have the polished set (first pic) - and am looking to try and trade someone for a set with the gloss black upper valve body (second pic). Hopefully I can find a set, because I think they would look pretty cool on the little bike.
Terrible prep job on it initially. The local guy used a stripping agent rather than sand blasting it. The powder application was sub-par as well :frown2:
Took a few more parts to the powdercoater earlier this week...swing arm, valve cover, and DASA silencer. I'll snap a few pics of those when they come back from powder.
In order to get the swing arm to powder, I had to remove the pivot bearing hardware...which wasn't fun since that stuff has never been removed since the swing arm was originally made back in 2012. I ruined the needle bearings getting them out, so I'm just going to get a new Pivot Works kit to refresh all the bearings, seals, etc. Few pics:
Thought I should post some specs of the engine that is in this build as well. It's a stock bore/stroke '05 motor with 13:1 DASA/JE Piston and an updated OEM crank with Carrillo Rod. It has a Racers Edge AZ Port with 36/31 ti valves, Web 242/812+5, and Dyna programmable ignition. I run a 43.5mm FCR carb, OEM intake w/ RE ring & filter, and DASA shorty exhaust. Below is the dyno graph with this motor on MR12 fuel. I also put a dyno run from an '07 TRX with a full Rossier exhaust, airbox lid off, and jetted on this graph for a comparison.
Last pic for today, this is the best time for 300' this bike (right lane) has run with me on it. It's a great little bracket/fair bike and I think it did well for weighing ~320 lbs. and having a 200lb. rider on it.
Some weekend progress. Got the new bearings, bushings, and seals installed into the swinger pivot tube. Put in some work polishing the JJ&A play axle. Got some of the rear-end assembled. Slowly coming together.
Got the 43.5mm FCR carb cleaned up and installed. The flange on the original float bowl nut was bent. Not sure when this happened...but I'm sure its a result of years of swapping jets. Replaced it with a nice looking Tokyo Mods nut.
Installed the throttle and new Spider A3 grips as well.
I'd been putting off re-packing the DASA canister for a few weeks now, but I finally completed it this week. Was a bit of a PITA with the steel wool and packing combined - but it came out nice with the fresh powder. Also went back to a silver decal which isn't too far off from the sliver on the frame.
Lastly, some more rear axle work. Got a new 40T PBI aluminum rear sprocket installed. All of the axle bolts, nuts, and washers are getting cleaned up and anti-seized. All hubs are getting polished. It's a slow process, but keeps me busy while it's cold outside. :grin2:
You can get those from Morgan Russell, user name is: morgan - on the forums. I'm pretty sure he still makes them. They are nice pieces; IMO the cleanest and best looking way to delete the oil cooler. We run them on all our engines.
Airbox & intake notched for the strut and installed:
Kicker slightly polished and installed:
Front and rear wheels polished:
Shaws are back from MS Shocks...new seals and powdered:
Everything is pretty much finished up and installed except plastics. Still not sure what I'm going to do as far as plastics go...may try to clean and shine up my old plastics, or might try and find a decent deal on a new set.
