on the 450r, the nuts are glued or pressed or something into the gas tank and some moisture got in there and stripped them out so they were just spinning and i couldnt tighten the fenders back down, luckily thanks to my extended warranty, i got a new tank and bolts for free and thats the second case of that happening and the dealership i work at anyway, anyone else run into this problem or know of any possible solutions to prevent it?

Use anti-seize on the bolts and don't over tighten them.

Yeah, I just bought my 06 used from someone and I was going to take the tank off and the **** left side tank bolt will not come off. I had to take the tank and front fender off in one piece! WTF!

well guy i feel your pain. this happened to me a long time ago. i have a fix that has worked for me.

so this is what i did. i managed to take the plastics off the tanks carefully by prying. then i grabbed a set of needle nose pliers and a 8mm socket and install the socket on my impact gun. i spun the brass insert nut with the 8mm bolt until it heated up the plastic while prying the bolt out with the needle nose pliers. so i finally took it out. i took a exacto knife to clean the hole where the insert just came out of. i cleaned the brass insert from melted plastic. i then made sure the insert would go back in the hole without much pressure. once i accomplished this i mixed a small batch of quick jbweld. i filled the hole about half way. then inserted the brass nut back in. wipe excess jb weld that comes out of hole. and just wait for it to dry and this works just good as new or better.

if anyone has questions just ask me. i'll help you.

Just wanted to let ya know...you saved my @$$!! I just happened to come across this thread....I stripped mine out last week, and just repaired it tonight after reading this post...so far so good, the J-B is almost dried and it seems to be holding well. If not for this thread I would have just left it like that and taken the whole front plastics off if I needed the tank off.

Im just glad this is a common problem, I was pissed at first when Mine did this to me, and my bike is less then a year old with not many rides on it.

gorilla glue may work but i'm not sure it will fill the hole in tightly like jb weld will.

These might be great fixes, but it's not the cure. I think the bolts threading into the brass and getting a piece of the brass threads "welded" to the steel threads of the bolt and then screwing up the brass threads of the insert on the way back in is the real culprit.

I've had both sides do this and I took my dremel out and removed the brass that was stuck to the bolts threads and voila - no more tight threads and it screws in with no problem.

I don't know a better cure than to be REALLY careful when screwing these bolts in. If it feels tight, there's probably a fubar'd thread - just clean it before you screw it back in. I fine wire brush on the bolt might work well too...
